2010-2011 NBA Predictions: San Antonio Spurs: Is this finally a rebuilding year for the San Antonio Spurs? After a 50-32 record in 2009-2010 and a second round playoff sweep against the Phoenix Suns, for the first time in a long time, the Spurs are not a favorite in the chase for the Western Conference crown. Vegas has posted the Spurs with 14/1 odds to win the Western Conference and 30/1 odds to win a championship.
In 2010-2011, the Spurs will still rely on veterans who have helped hoist banners for this franchise, but will be mixing-in new blood as well. After scoring about 20 points per game in the past two seasons, small forward Richard Jefferson slumped last season but is leading the team in scoring (20.0 PPG) in the early going. He is one of the players the Spurs would like to see step-up their games as well as 21-year old power forward DeJuan Blair and 21-year old shooting guard James Anderson.
The nucleus of this team, however, are still the trio of future HOF center Tim Duncan, shooting guard Manu Ginobili, and point guard Tony Parker. The Spurs would like to see all three players play less minutes, around 30 minutes each, to keep their legs fresh throughout the season. The Spurs, particularly, would like to protect Duncan, who averaged just under 20 points in the playoffs last season.
If you are looking for a dark horse out of the west, picking the Spurs, perennial contenders, might be a good bet.
