NCAA Basketball: Upsets Rule the Day

Though #1 Ohio State (22-0) and #2 Pitt (20-2) escaped with narrow victories, the Buckeyes at Northwestern 58-57 and the Panthers at Rutgers later in the day, 65-62, Saturday was a day of upsets in college basketball.
Consider:
- #5 Connecticut (17-3) lost at home to Louisville (17-4) in double overtime 79-78 after their magnificent guard missed shots at the end of regulation and overtime that would have won the game for the Huskies.
- #7 Villanova (17-4) lost at home to #20 Georgetown (16-5) by a score of 69-66 as Austin Freeman led the Hoyas with 30 points in a tough Big East battle.
- #9 BYU (20-2) lost at the Pit to New Mexico (15-7) by a score of 86-77, even though Jimmer Fredette poured in 32 points for the Cougars. Guard Tony Snell scored 16 points off the bench to spark the Lobos.
- #10 Syracuse (18-4) suffered its fourth straight loss in Big East competition, falling to Marquette (14-8) in a stunner at Marquette 76-70. This was the first time since the Golden Eagles joined the Big East that they had beaten the Orange.
The Buckeyes, meanwhile, survived poor shooting performances from their guards and frosh forward Jared Sullinger rode to the rescue again, making the winning free throws with just 3.5 seconds remaining and scoring 21 points as Ohio State continued their unbeaten ways.
