2011 Fiesta Bowl: UConn vs Oklahoma

When the University of Connecticut (8-4) lost to Louisville 26-0, dropping the Huskies’ record to 3-4, no one around the program was talking a Big East championship and a trip to a BCS bowl game. UConn, though, ran-off five straight games and now the Huskies will play the Big 12 champion Oklahoma Sooners (11-2) in the 2011 Fiesta Bowl.

The Huskies are big underdogs, Vegas has them at +17, but Connecticut has some strengths that can possibly keep them in the game against the Sooners. In Jordan Todman, Connecticut has a superior running back who can move the chains. Todman gained 1,574 yards with 14 touchdowns and the Huskies needed every yard since their passing game ranked 113th in the nation. Defensively, the Huskies give-up less than twenty points per game so they tend to keep games close.

Hiccups against Missouri and Texas A&M cost the Sooners a chance at playing for a national championship but Oklahoma is an elite program with a dynamic offense. The Sooners averaged 36.4 points per game with a big three of Landry Jones at quarterback (35 TDs), RB DeMarco Murray (1,121 and 14 touchdowns) and WR Ryan Broyles (118 catches and 13 TDs).

Oklahoma should win this game easily but the Huskies have been surprising opponents all season and the game could be closer than thought.
