Offensively, the Utes run a spread offense which has given the Pitt Panthers fits over the years. The two-headed monster of sophomore Jordan Wynn and senior Terrance Cain run the offense at quarterback but expect to see more of Wynn. Wynn is athletic and accurate as a quarterback, completing nearly 60% of his passes a year ago, while Cain is more of a running-style quarterback. Utah will look to spread out the ball against the Panther defense and, though they have lost three of the top four receivers from 2009, they still possess the receiving talent to be an explosive offense. Wynn will look for top-returning receiver senior Jereme Brooks as his go-to guy, but as many as five or six Utah players could see passes. Senior Eddie Wide returns at running back to keep the Panthers pass rush honest and Wide has skills both as a runner and receiver out of the backfield.
Look for Utah to throw a lot of short, quick passes and maybe some bubble screens against the Pittsburgh defense that led the nation in sacks a year ago. The Panthers arguably have the best defensive line in the nation with seniors Greg Romeus and Jaball Sheard as bookend defensive ends. Romeus was injured much of training camp and could be limited in his snaps on Thursday. The Panthers expect to get big contributions from sophomore middle linebacker Dan Mason, a heavy hitter, and juniors Max Gruder and Greg Williams are steady if not spectacular on the outside. Pitt relies on its front four to bring pressure so you’ll see the linebackers in coverage and the outside guys could have some opportunities for interceptions. The secondary is inexperienced and they’ll get a baptism by fire against the high-powered Utes. Junior cornerback Antwuan Reed is the featured player in the defensive backfield.
When Utah is on offense, it will be their spread vs. Pitt’s strength and whichever team dictates tempo and controls the line of scrimmage will have the most success. Look for the Utes to score at least 21 points against what could be one of the best defenses in the nation.
