Stanford University traveled to Notre Dame last weekend and came home with an impressive victory over the Fighting Irish and what is their reward? The Cardinals get a trip to Eugene to face the University of Oregon, a powerhouse team leading the nation in scoring and ranked #4 in the nation. The Vegas odds have placed the Ducks as -6 1/2 point favorites at home in this PAC-10 showdown of top ten teams in week five of the NCAA College Football season.
The #9 ranked Stanford (4-0) is coming off one of the biggest wins in school history with their 37-14 win over Notre Dame. The Cardinals feature a dynamic offense, fourth in the nation with an average of 48 points per game, and they’ll need all hands on deck against the Ducks. Quarterback Andrew Luck is having an amazing year with 912 passing yards and 11 touchdowns in just four games. Doug Baldwin leads a balanced receiving corps with 12 catches for an average of 18.5 yards per catch, while Stepfan Taylor is the leading rusher. Luck can run too and has a 52-yard touchdown run.
And Stanford’s offensive talent might not even be the best on the field on Saturday as #4 Oregon (4-0) possesses the top-ranked unit in the country, scoring at a 57.8 clip. Quarterback Darron Thomas is the trigger man with 822 yards passing and 10 touchdowns. The ground game is punishing, with 1,267 yards gained in just four games. Oregon has five players with over 100 yards rushing, including Heisman candidate LaMichael James who is averaging 7.8 yards per carry, with four touchdowns.
The Cardinals have the weapons to hang with the Ducks, but can they contain the Oregon attack? A year ago, Stanford defeated Oregon at home 51-42 so another potential shoot-out is not possible, but probable. The Ducks have enough talent to send the Cardinals packing. Definitely take the over at 65 1/2 and look for Oregon to cover the spread as the last team standing.
