Penn State head coach Joe Paterno swears that his health is fine and he has no plans to retire while Florida head coach Urban Meyer has already announced his plans to resign.
The two men will compete against each other on the sidelines as Penn State University (7-5) versus Florida (7-5) in the 2011 Outback Bowl.
The Penn State program has been surrounded by questions involving Paterno’s retirement for the past ten years but the talk really heated-up with rumors that the 84-year old coach was hospitalized and this would be his last game coaching. Paterno discounted those rumors at the Outback Bowl press conference but still talk shows around Pennsylvania have been buzzing about the imminent departure of Paterno, some reports even suggested he would be replaced by ex-Colts coach Tony Dungy. The rumors have over-shadowed Paterno’s team that won seven games despite a young squad. PSU features running back Evan Royster, Derek Moye, and quarterback Matt McGloin.
Last season, Urban Meyer nearly resigned due to health issues but reconsidered but this season the announcement is apparently serious. In a rebuilding year without QB Tim Tebow, Florida has struggled somewhat through the rugged SEC conference schedule to find an identity and still plans on using a three-quarterback rotation, John Brantley, Jordan Reed, and Trey Burton. Burton has been effective in the goal line, with 11 TDs.
Florida is favored by -7 points in a game between two high-profile coaches.
