Will Strikeforce star Cung Le get his shot in the UFC?
You'd have to go back to early 2008 to find a Cung Le opponent in MMA not named Scott Smith. The Strikeforce fighter-cum-Hollywood actor is contemplating his next bout, and he'd like to do it with Zuffa's varsity squad in the UFC. When asked about the status of his future, he made the condition of his return that he show up on a UFC card -- preferably the UFC 139 card in San Jose.
There's that stubborn Showtime issue again. If the UFC can navigate a deal to free Le of his existing contract (and so far the UFC hasn't been overly eager to meddle in such ways), it would be a big draw for Le to fight in San Jose again, where every one of his eight pro fights has taken place. Though he is 39 years old, the kickboxer would be more than a novelty signing.
"I know for a fact that if I do fight again, it's going to be in the UFC," he told MMA Weekly in a recent interview. "I've never fought in the UFC, but I would love to fight in the UFC. But right now because of my contract with Showtime and Strikeforce, hopefully things can work out because there is a show in San Jose that Cain Velasquez is the main event. I would love to fight in San Jose for the UFC and for Dana White and Lorenzo (Fertitta)."
