Kentucky Derby 2013 - BLACK ONYX Scratched from Post Position 1

k-breen-kentucky-derby-black-onyx-trainerEarly morning action is already effecting the 2013 Kentucky Derby. An announcement was made this morning that the 50/1 longshot was scratched and that post position 1 will be left open. According to Churchill Downs Sterling Racing's BLACK ONYX has been scratched from the Kentucky Derby due to an ankle injury.

We noticed a little swelling in the ankle this morning, previous to training,” stated BLACK ONLY trainer K. Breen said. “It brought major concern right away. He went out, he trained, he did gallop. He came back and was, say, a one out of five lameness.”

Jockey Joe Bravo said he never noticed anything amiss while he was aboard for the colt’s two previous workouts. “I‘m just very thankful that the horse is going to be OK,” stated Bravo. “Maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.”
