Dwight Howard might wear an “S” on his shirt but even Superman couldn’t get his team past the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference last season. Vegas has given the Orlando Magic 5/1 odds of knocking Boston off their throne.
Howard is the engine that revs the Magic offensive attack and is one of the game’s best rebounders and shot blockers. He has averaged nearly 20 points per game with over 13 rebounds in the past four years with nearly 3 blocked shots. Three years ago, Rashard Lewis was brought-in to provide a second scoring threat for Howard but he has seen his points per game drop by four since 2007-2008. The addition of Vince Carter added another scoring threat but he is aging and has yet to capture the magic that he add as a Net and a Raptor.
The Magic, though, do have several players who play key support roles, including Jameer Nelson who runs the show at point guard, Quentin Richardson who plays tough defense, and J. J. Redick, Mickael Pietrus, Brandon Bass, and Chris Duhon.
With Howard the Magic and are elite team but, if Lewis and Carter continue their descent, Orlando could fall this season as a top team in the East. The Magic may have to make some moves at mid-season to get back into the race if their two veterans falter.
