NFL Week 1 Predictions: Lions vs. Bears Vegas Odds & NFL Spreads

Detroit-Lions-WilliamsNFL Week 1 Predictions - Lions vs. Bears Vegas Odds & NFL Spreads: In week one of the NFL predictions regular season, two NFC North division rivals clash as the Detroit Lions visit the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago. The current  Vegas odds have placed the Bears as -6½(-110) point week 1 NFL picks favorites as the home team. The Bears were not good against the NFL spread (ATS) in 2009, going 6-10 and 4-4 ATS at home. The Lions have not fared any better against the NFL spread either, with a 4-8 record ATS as a road dog. For a team that has exactly three NFL predictions wins in two years, that’s not too bad actually. Last NFL picks season, the Bears racked-up 48 and 37 points in their two-game sweep and have not lost a NFL predictions matchup to Detroit since 2007.

The Bears were inconsistent last season, a direct reflection on their quarterback Jay Culter. Culter had 20+ touchdowns and 20+ interceptions, and that ratio has to drop in 2010. Cutler has some offensive weapons but not enough. Johnny Knox and Devin Hester are average as receivers but tight end Greg Olsen makes a good red zone target. The running game was also inconsistent in 2010 but Matt Forte should have a bounce back year in 2010 and Chester Taylor can make an impact as a change-of-pace runner.

Both players could have big games against the Lions, whose were in the bottom rankings in both passing and run defense. The Lions, though, could be improved as a unit with the signing of DE Kyle Vanden Bosch, and the drafting of NT Ndamukong Suh to bolster the line. The secondary of the Lions is still terrible and the linebackers were soft. The Lions are hoping for a rebound year from Julian Peterson at linebacker. The Lions are especially vulnerable in the passing game so look for Cutler to try and throw early and often.

Defensively, the Bears will get a big lift from two star defensive players – free agent signee Julius Peppers and linebacker Brian Urlacher, who is coming back from an injury-plagued season in 2010. Peppers should be in the face of Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, and the secondary for the Bears played fairly well in 2009 so you can expect the Bears to challenge the Lions’ receivers.

Detroit, though, can counter with some offensive punch of their own with receiver Calvin Johnson and rookie running back Jahvid Best. The offensive line, though, has trouble protecting the quarterback so look for multiple sacks of Stafford in the week 1 NFL picks contest.

The Lions have been so bad for so long that you have to wonder if this team isn’t due for a turnaround year. Stafford and Johnson can make big plays and Best is a wild card. Will they be enough to close the gap the -6½ point gap in this week 1 NFL predictions matchup? We are talking about the Lions, you know.
