In the battle for Texas the roles have been reversed as the perennial powerhouse Dallas Cowboys (0-2) visit the Houston Texans (2-0) in a marquee match-up for week three of the NFL season. Vegas odds have placed the Texans as +3 favorites at home.
The Texans look for a team poised to make a serious playoff run. They have won their first two games in completely different fashions. Down 27-10 in the third quarter on the road against the Washington Redskins last week, Houston reeled off 20 straight points and won in overtime 30-27, mainly behind the arm of quarterback Matt Schaub. The week before, against the Colts at home, the Texans finally found a way to beat Indianapolis behind a surprising and punishing ground game. Start with Schaub, who has completed nearly 70% of his passes, with 4 touchdowns. Andre Johnson is still his leading receiver, with 15 catches, and now that passing game, averaging 300 yards per game, is now complemented by a good ground attack, led by little-known Arian Foster, who has rushed for 300 yards.
The Cowboys, on the other hand, have started 0-2, and, that start from a team that has aspirations to end their season in the Super Bowl on their own home turf. Last week, the Chicago Bears and Jay Cutler threw all over the Cowboys secondary to the tune of 3 TDs and 277 yards. The Cowboys have no interceptions and just two sacks. They will need to put pressure on Schaub or it could be another long day for the ‘Boys. Linebacker DeMarcus Ware has 9 tackles but just 1 sack. He will need a multi-sack game against the Texans. Look for Houston to attack the Cowboys’ secondary while mixing in the run. They struggled last week to gain traction in the ground game but they’ll need to keep the Dallas pass rush honest.
With momentum on their side, Houston should cover in a close game, especially with the season on the line for the Cowboys.
