NFL Week Eight Predictions: Minnesota vs. New England

Will he or won’t he? That is the question Vegas oddsmakers are asking about the status of Brett Favre of the Minnesota Vikings (2-4) in the game against the New England Patriots (5-1). As of today, Favre was seen doing some light throwing and will be listed as questionable for the game on Sunday. Because of his iron man status, Favre is a good bet to be on that field but how effective he will be or how long he will last is another question. Many Vegas books do not have this game listed, though the early line was at -4 in favor of the Patriots at home.

Even with Favre, the Vikings have struggled and have been one of the NFL’s biggest disappointments. Defensively, the team has limited opponents’ passing and rushing defense, though they have forced precious big plays, with just six sacks and nine turnovers. Despite a variety of ailments, Favre has played every snap for the Vikings this season and has been disappointing, with just seven touchdown passes. If Favre can’t go and even if he can, look for Tavaris Jackson to get some time at quarterback and he will benefit from one of the best receivers in the history of the NFL. Yet, even with the addition of Randy Moss, who has just 12 catches and two touchdowns, the Vikings passing game has still struggled. The return of Moss to New England is a big story in this football game and, if nothing else, Moss will be motivated. Superstar running back Adrian Peterson has been one Viking who hasn’t disappointed. He has 684 yards and 5 touchdowns with a long gain of 80 yards.

New England has won their last two games by 3 points against the Ravens and Chargers and they are still a force in the NFL. Statistically, the Patriots are not dominant in any one area but, instead, play as a team. Tom Brady is still Tom Brady and the return of Deion Branch at receiver has rejuvenated this offense. O. J. Mayo has been the star of an opportunistic defense that has scored two touchdowns while only allowing two touchdowns on the ground. The secondary has been suspect so Moss could have room to roam if someone can get him the ball.

This game is off most boards until further news on Favre is available but, Golden Brett or no, the Patriots look strong enough to handle this challenge.
