For the San Diego Chargers (8-7) this was going to be the year that the team finally took the next step but, instead of advancing to the Super Bowl as many had predicted, the Chargers will be skipping the postseason completely as they prepare for their week 17 match-up against the Denver Broncos (4-11).
Even though they won four straight games in the middle of the season, the team never could recover from a 2-5 start and their second place in the AFC West finish just might cost head coach Norv Turner his job. The Chargers just never seemed to add-up to the sum of their parts. They outscored their opponents by over 100 points but lost games to such opponents as Seattle, St. Louis, Cincinnati, and Oakland, twice. Don’t blame the failures on Phillip Rivers, though, as the quarterback threw for nearly 4,400 yards and 30 touchdowns.
The Tim Tebow era has begun in Denver, but you have to wonder how long it will last. Tebow has done some things right, like help snap a five-game losing streak in last week’s24-23 win over Houston, and has thrown for 449 yards and three touchdowns. Tebow’s game has never been about statistics, though, he just helps his team win. If Tebow is the man of the future, he’ll need to figure out how to get the ball into the hands of his playmakers, like WR Brandon Lloyd, more often.
Denver is favored by -3 points.
