The Women's Alpine Skiing kickoff event, the Giant Slalom, was postponed due to weather and wind conditions but is now completed. Mikaela Shiffrin (USA) won the Gold Medal in her second run. Ragnhild Mowinckel (NOR) held on for the Silver Medal and Federica Brignone (ITA) won the Bronze Medal.
The wome's Slalom is underway. Mikaela Shiffrin in the Vegas odds makers favorite for that one. The next event for the women is the Super G which is scheduled, weather permitting, on Saturday, February 17th. The Super G like the Downhill is a speed event because of longer runs and more distance between the gates. The Super-G also has a higher vertical drop which also makes it a speed event. The Giant Slalom and Slalom are considered "technical" due to a larger amount of gates and turns. The Vegas Odds Makers favorite for the Super G is Lindsay Vonn (USA) at +170. Vonn won a bronze medal in the Super-G and a gold medal in the Downhill event at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. She did not finish any other alpine skiing event. In the World Championship last year she was third in the Downhill and fifth in the Alpine Combined. At 33 years of age, Vonn is on the USA Olympic team and racing for a Gold Medal. The odds makers list Soffie Goggia (ITA) at +350 and Lara Gut (SWI) at +550 to win the Gold. Giant Slalom Gold Medalist Mikeala Shiffrin has announced that she will not compete in the Super-G. The postponements of the first two events has made for a tight schedule and Mikeala is opting for a day of rest before she gets back on the slopes for the Downhill and Alpine Combined events next week. Rest up Mikeala while Lindsay Vonn the odds makers favorite tries to ski her way to a Gold Medal.
