NHL Preview: Washington vs. Philadelphia
|
17 January 2011
A match-up of two of the elite teams in the NHL’s Eastern Conference is on tap on Tuesday, January 18, as the Washington Capitals (25-14-7) visits the Philadelphia Flyers (29-11-5).
Washington has had mixed results in the month of January with a 3-3-2 record, treading water since their appearance in the Winter Classic, and remaining in a tie for their division lead with Tampa Bay. Alex Ovechkin has been ice cold with 0 points in his past three games as the offense has struggled to generate points with Alexander Semin out of the lineup on injured reserve with a hip injury. That is not good news against a Philadelphia team that has played good defense all season, especially on the road, where the Capitals have struggled to reach five-hundred with a 9-9-2 record.
The Flyers continue to lead the Eastern conference in points with 63 and are second in the league in goals scored with 155. Philadelphia has a dangerous line-up with Danny Briere (24 goals), Mike Richards (15 goals, 40 points), and winger Claude Giroux (17 goals, 39 points) leading the way. The Flyers, after years of struggling in net, finally have a pair of effective goalies in young Sergei Bobrovsky and veteran Brian Boucher.
This is a game Philadelphia should win, especially with Semin out, unless Ovchekin can shake-off his slump and get the Capitals some much-needed scoring.
