Kenny Florian tried a lot of things on Saturday night with his come from behind victory by unanimous decision over Diego Nunes.
He proved that you can hang with the upper echelon of the featherweight division of the UFC and, despite leaving it looking like a scarecrow in the yard, which still has the gas to venture into deep waters after the weight giant cutout to 145 pounds.
But with UFC president Dana White says the UFC Picks victory now "most likely" Florian sets with a shot at the featherweight title against Jose Aldo, the biggest challenge of his career looms large.
See, White still believes Florian doesn't come through in title fights. He has said before and repeated it again after the UFC 131 Event.. There is some anecdotal evidence to support their case, too, namely previous Florian lightweight title fights against Sean Sherk and BJ Penn, both of which ended in disappointing UFC losses. If the UFC is truly intent on fast-forwarding him into a bout with Aldo (much to the chagrin of Chad Mendes, I assume) it likely represents the 35-year-old Florian's last best shot at winning a UFC championship. Nobody wants to be the guy who lost three title fights in the Octagon. Nobody wants to lay claim to the throne as arguably the best fighter never to win a UFC belt, especially after competing in four different weight classes. For that reason, even though Florian passed his entrance exams on Saturday, the next test may well be the only one that matters.
